Few things you should know before buying a SIM card from a vending machine

  • 1. Some machines only accept cash while some only credit card.
  • 2. Items might be sold out.
  • 3. Those prepaid SIM cards are all DATA ONLY SIM cards. If you need a voice SIM, you need to buy it the sellers in the airport during their opening hours.
  • 4. They will not issue any refund even if your phone was not compatible with the SIM card or if you mistakenly purchased a wrong size.

Order in advance to save your time

If you don't want to waste your time looking for a SIM card in the airport, we recommend you make an arrangement online before coming to Japan. Some services including CDJapan Rental will send your ordered items to any Japan post office for your collection or deliver it to your hotel.

As for CDJapan Rental, using their service will offer some advantages that you won't be able to get from prepaid SIM card sellers.

  1. Easy pick up.
Have it delivered to your hotel, and pick it up when you check in.
  2. Easy return.
Since the service is rental, SIM cards need to be returned at the end of contract. But it is very easy as they provide you a return envelope, which includes the postage.
  3. Get some support.
If you bought a wrong size, get it exchanged. If your device wasn't compatible, get a refund. If you lost your phone with their SIM card, contact them and they will help you.
  4. Flexible plans.
There are plans suitable for both short and long stay. Even if your itinerary change, you have an option to extend your rental later.

I wish I'd known about CDJapan Rental before! Definitely the best value if you don't mind the speed limit - even the limited speed is okay for emergencies. The best part is the longer plans they offer - many other services make you buy a brand new sim every 30 days or go through annoying top-up processes. I haven't actually tried the service yet but can't wait to do so next time I'm in the country!
