The crime rate in Japan has always been low, and it is quite famous in the world. However, if you are planning to come to Japan for tourism or study/work, you will be worried about the safety of the location when choosing a place to stay. Especially if you are a girl living alone, you will worry about the safety of walking from the station to your home at night, as well as the possibility of burglary.

Take Tokyo for example, do you know which of Tokyo’s 23 districts is the worst in terms of security? And which is the best district? Where is the safest place to live in Tokyo?

If you know the rumors of the 23 wards in Tokyo, you will probably think, “Isn’t Adachi the ward with the worst law and order? . But is that really the case?

Let’s take a look at the security situation in Tokyo’s 23 wards from the data.

Ranking of the worst areas for law and order

Let’s start with the conclusion.

The top 5 of Tokyo’s 23 districts with the worst security are shown in the table below.

RankingDistrictCrime rate
1Chioda-ku2.84%
2Shibuya-ku1.47%
3Shinjuku-ku1.37%
4Taido-ku1.17%
5Toshima-ku1.07%

The crime rate is calculated by comparing the number of crimes in the year with the total population of the district. The top five on the list are Chiyoda, where the imperial residence is located, Shinjuku and Shibuya, where the shopping and fashion center is located, Taito, where Ueno is often visited, and Toyoshima, where Ikebukuro is located. …… This is a list of places that you really hear about all the time.

In fact, it is because these five districts have five super-high-traffic stations – Akihabara, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ueno, and Ikebukuro – that they are more prone to crime – and the crimes we are talking about in the data we have taken here are not as major and vicious as you might think, such as murder and arson. In this statistic from the Japanese police department In the Japanese police department’s statistics, the most recorded incidents are actually thefts. Since these five districts are usually crowded with tourists, the possibility of petty crime such as petty theft increases.

However, as we will see below, not all areas of the district have a particularly high crime rate. For example, there are imperial residences in Chiyoda, and safety is still guaranteed in the vicinity of these residences.

Ranking of the best districts for law and order

Among the 23 wards in Tokyo, the top 5 best and worst security districts are shown in the table below.

<thRanking

DistrictCrime rate
1Bunkyo-ku0.39%
2Suginami-ku0.44%
3Sedagaya-ku0.45%
4Nerima-ku0.45%
5Shinagawa-ku0.49%

The calculation is the same as above.

The Bunkyo-ku is a famous place for universities in Tokyo. The University of Tokyo, Ochanomizu Women’s University, and Tsukuba University are all located in Bunkyo-ku. There are many students, many police stations, and many police officers patrolling the area almost 24 hours a day, so Bunkyo-ku has been the safest district in Tokyo for several years.

The Suginami-ku has a high vegetation coverage and has been a popular residential area for many families with children. Probably because of the need to protect children, residents are more safety conscious, and recently street lights and security cameras have been gradually increased, and there are many police patrols.

The Setagaya-ku is known as a high-class residential area in Tokyo, where many famous people live, and many embassies are located in the district, so it is heavily guarded. However, because the area is so large, there are differences in the level of security depending on the area of residence, but in general it is a relatively safe area for women to live alone.

There are no busy streets and very few entertainment venues in the Nerima-ku, and most of them are quiet residential streets. There are a lot of children and students, and the residents are more aware of their guards, and police patrols are more than adequate.

The fifth place is Shinagawa-ku. This year, Shinagawa-ku has made it to the top five, beating out Meguro-ku, which also has a large number of embassies, thanks to the security cameras installed on the streets. The recent efforts to clean up parked bicycles and violent criminals at Shinagawa Station must be one of the reasons why Shinagawa-ku is getting safer.

The security situation varies from station to station

As we mentioned above, Chiyoda, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Taito, and Toshima are among the top five districts in Tokyo in terms of law and order. But is the security situation in any of these areas terrible?

Actually, it is not.

Most of the major security incidents in these five wards occur in the vicinity of busy stations, while the residential and office areas in the wards are much safer. For example, Kabukicho near Shinjuku Station, and Ameyokocho near Ueno Station, and other areas with busy streets, entertainment venues, and tourists, are relatively more likely to have more incidents.

In addition, even if the same station has different exits, the crime rate in the area directly in front of it varies greatly. Take Shinjuku Station for example, the three streets of Shinjuku 3-chome, Kabukicho 1-chome, and Kabukicho 2-chome at the east exit account for about one-third of the total number of crimes in Shinjuku, while the vast area from Nishi-Shinjuku 1-chome to 8-chome at the west exit accounts for only about one-seventh of the total number of crimes in Shinjuku, and the Kita-Shinjuku area at the north exit accounts for only one-thirtieth of the total number of crimes.

If you want to live near a busy station and want to live in a place where the crime rate is not so high, just remember to stay away from entertainment venues and attractions and check the statistics.

Good security does not necessarily mean comfortable living

After talking about the areas with bad law and order, let’s look at the areas with good law and order. Good security district must be comfortable to live in?

This is not necessarily.

As we mentioned above, among the top five districts with good security and low crime rate in this year’s ranking, except for Bunkyo district, which has a large number of universities, and Shinagawa district, which is booming, the other three districts are densely populated with residential areas, without particularly famous attractions and entertainment venues, and even far away from the center of Tokyo. Although there are supermarkets and other facilities that do not make life difficult, if you are a person who likes to pursue fashion, has an outgoing personality, and wants to have something new and exciting every day, then most likely these districts are not suitable for you.

It doesn’t have the glamour of Shinjuku, or the scent of Shibuya, or the crowds of Ueno Ikebukuro and Akihabara, and even the residential areas are far from the train station. Even though it is safe, it seems that it is not the “paradise town” that everyone thinks it is.
