The Atami Sea Fireworks Festival, a major event in Japan, is renowned for its spectacular displays. With Atami Fireworks 2024 on the horizon, this festival, which dates back to 1952 (Showa 27), stands out by offering more than ten events annually throughout the year, unlike other festivals that are typically limited to the summer. This unique feature makes Atami a year-round attraction for fireworks enthusiasts.
The festival is held in Atami Bay, which is uniquely situated, surrounded by mountains and shaped like a bowl. This geography causes the sound of the fireworks over the sea to reflect and create an acoustic effect similar to a large sports stadium. Due to this, it is recognized as the best fireworks launching location in Japan by fireworks experts. The evening fireworks, their reflection on the water, and the grand “Aerial Niagara Falls” finale are truly captivating, making it an unforgettable attraction of Atami.

History of the Atami Sea Fireworks Festival
As of 2023 (Reiwa 5), the Atami Sea Fireworks Festival celebrated its 72nd birthday.
The Atami fireworks festival began in 1952 (Showa 27). Starting in Showa 27, the city of Atami began hosting the fireworks festival as a way to thank its citizens for their efforts in revitalizing the town in previous years. The event has been passed down ever since and has now become a traditional event held throughout the year, synonymous with Atami.
Atami’s fireworks are known for two main features: the “Aerial Niagara Falls” as the grand finale and the “special launching ground.”
The Atami Sea Fireworks Festival always concludes with the “Aerial Niagara Falls.” Instead of individual special-effect fireworks, numerous fireworks are launched simultaneously, illuminating the night sky with silver fireworks that are dazzling and bright, just like daytime.
Additionally, Atami Bay, where the event takes place, is highly regarded by fireworks experts as the best fireworks launching location in Japan. Atami Bay’s unique “bowl” shape, surrounded by mountains, causes the sound of the fireworks over the sea to reflect and create an acoustic effect akin to a large sports stadium.
